Fillings – An Essential Dental Treatment
Having a filling placed is one of the most common and essential treatments in dentistry. Fillings are necessary to stabilize your tooth with a durable material after removing the area of decay. Amalgam fillings (a combination of metals, including mercury) have been widely used in the past because amalgam was considered a durable material that worked well for filling large cavities.
But many people today are worried about the presence of mercury in fillings because they’ve heard it may be dangerous to their health. While there is no conclusive proof that this is the case, Phoenix dentist Dr. Jupneesh Singh wants all our patients to feel completely confident and secure with the treatments that we offer. That is why Singh Smile Care uses only composite material for fillings. Composite fillings are strong, durable, and more aesthetically pleasing than mercury fillings.
What Are the Advantages of Using Composite Fillings?
Aside from potential safety concerns, one of the reasons Dr. Singh chooses composite fillings instead of mercury is that composite material can be shaded to closely match the color of your natural teeth. Compared to amalgam fillings that are dark and noticeable when you smile, composite fillings blend with the color of your natural teeth.
Composite fillings are also extremely durable, adding strength to a tooth that has been filled. Amalgam fillings tend to “shrink” over time, causing the filling to pull away from the healthy part of your teeth. Composite fillings will not shrink, so they continue to provide durable support for your tooth for many years. Using composite fillings, Dr. Singh only needs to remove a small portion of your healthy tooth structure, providing further strength to your natural tooth.
How Are Composite Fillings Used?
How Do I Know if I Need a Filling?
Visual exams allow Dr. Singh to find decay on the surfaces of your teeth. X-rays show advanced decay located deep within the tooth. But neither of these methods shows decay that is developing just below the surface of the tooth. Using a device called DIAGNOdent, Dr. Singh can find decay in its earliest stages so that it can be treated before it spreads and causes further decay and damage to your tooth.
No matter how thorough you are with your oral hygiene, you still may develop a cavity. That is why routine visits to our Phoenix dentist office for exams and cleanings are so important. Protecting your oral health is our top priority, so we use up-to-date technology and materials to ensure that you always receive the most superior dental care available.
