Which Is Better: Invisalign or Braces?

Both straighten teeth and correct bites. The better choice depends on the case, the patient, and how they live day to day.

Which Is Better: Invisalign or Braces?

Parents ask us this all the time, and adults considering treatment for themselves do too. Straight teeth are easier to clean, which helps prevent cavities, and orthodontic treatment also fixes bite problems. Braces and Invisalign can both get there. The difference is in how they move the teeth and what living with them is like.

There is no single right answer. Some cases are better suited to braces, many do well with either, and personal preference matters. Here is a plain comparison to help you weigh it up before your evaluation with us in Glendale.

How Each One Works

Braces are brackets bonded to each tooth with a wire running between them. Most are metal, though tooth-colored options exist, and the wire is adjusted at visits every one to two months. They stay on for the whole treatment, which can be a plus for anyone likely to misplace an aligner.

Invisalign uses clear, custom plastic trays made from a 3D scan of your teeth. They come out for eating and drinking and are worn about 21 to 22 hours a day, with a new set every week or two and check-ins roughly every six to eight weeks.

Which Works Better

It depends on the problem and the patient. Invisalign works well for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites, and it can be used while some baby teeth are still present. Its success depends on wearing the trays as directed.

Braces are durable, do not rely on compliance, and are usually the choice for complex cases like missing or extra teeth, teeth that do not meet, jaw positioning issues, or delayed adult teeth. The orthodontic evaluation makes the final call.

Daily Life With Each

With braces, you avoid gum, hard candy, nuts, and other foods that can break a bracket, and you brush after meals and use a water flosser or special floss. With Invisalign there are no food restrictions since the trays come out, but you brush and floss before putting them back and clean the trays well. Many teens and adults prefer aligners because they are hard to see.

  • Braces: food restrictions, extra cleaning tools
  • Invisalign: eat freely, clean trays daily
  • Invisalign: nearly invisible
  • Braces: nothing to lose or forget

After Treatment

Teeth want to drift back, so after braces most patients wear a retainer, usually at night. After Invisalign we will tell you what is needed to hold the result. Lost or damaged aligners can be replaced, though it may add a little time, and Invisalign Teen plans include replacement aligners.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child start treatment?

Most children are ready once their permanent teeth have come in. If we see a concern earlier, we will tell you. Invisalign can also be used in some cases where baby teeth are still present.

What is the main difference between Invisalign and braces?

Braces use fixed brackets, wires, and elastics that stay on for the full treatment. Invisalign uses removable aligners that are replaced as the teeth move and must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day.

Which is faster?

Braces typically take 18 to 24 months. Invisalign often takes 12 to 18 months, and minor cases can finish in around six months. Six Month Smiles aligners and clear braces for ages 16 and up are designed for about six months.

Are there follow-up visits with Invisalign?

Yes, about every six to eight weeks so we can check progress and hand over your next sets of trays. You can always come in sooner if something feels off.

How do I find out which is right for me?

Book an evaluation. We look at your teeth, your bite, and your goals, then explain which options fit and what each would involve. Financing options are available.
