A crown covers a tooth that is too damaged for a filling: deep decay, a crack, a large old filling, or a tooth that has had a root canal. Traditionally that meant an impression, a temporary crown and a wait of weeks for an outside lab. Our Glendale office has its own Glidewell.io milling system, so we make the crown while you wait.
The material is BruxZir NOW solid zirconia from Glidewell Laboratories. It is all-ceramic with no metal underneath, and we match the shade to your neighboring teeth. Most patients are in and out in about one to two hours.
How a Same-Day Crown Is Made
After the tooth is numbed and the decay removed, we take a digital scan instead of a tray of putty. The scan goes straight to the design software, where the crown is shaped to fit your bite. The mill then carves it from a single zirconia block. We check the fit, polish it and bond it in place.
Why Skip the Temporary
Temporary crowns are made of weaker material, can come loose and leave the prepared tooth exposed for weeks. A single-visit crown means the tooth is sealed and protected the day it is prepared. The digital scan also reduces fitting errors because there is no impression to distort.
- One numbing, one visit
- Nothing to break while you wait for a lab
- More of your natural tooth preserved
- Gentle on the gums during placement
When You Might Need a Crown
- Decay too deep for a filling
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- A tooth that has had a root canal
- A large filling that keeps breaking
- The final tooth on top of a dental implant
- A worn or discolored front tooth
Caring for Your New Crown
Avoid chewy, sticky or very hard foods for up to two days while the cement sets. Some hot and cold sensitivity is normal for up to two weeks. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and do not bite pens, ice or nutshells. With good hygiene and checkups twice a year, a zirconia crown can last for many years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anesthetic first, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Minor sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and usually eases with over-the-counter pain relief.
Is zirconia strong enough for back teeth?
Yes. BruxZir NOW is a solid zirconia made for exactly that. It has no metal base, so it looks natural and handles chewing forces well.
Can I get a crown and a root canal on the same day?
Often, yes. If the tooth needs a root canal first, we can complete it and then mill and place the crown in the same appointment. Ask when you book so we set aside enough time.
Will people notice the crown?
The crown is all-ceramic and shade matched to the surrounding teeth, so it blends in. There is no dark metal line at the gum.
Does insurance cover a same-day crown?
Many plans cover a portion of crowns that repair decay or damage. We check your benefits and give you a written estimate before we start.
