Why do I need to replace missing teeth?

It is important to replace missing teeth promptly after they are lost because missing teeth can cause other serious oral health problems. There are several tooth replacement options available at most dental offices, but dental implants are by far the first choice of dentists and patients alike.

A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement option that is stable, durable, and looks like your natural tooth. We recommend dental implants to many of our Phoenix, AZ dental patients!

Tooth alignment issues are one of the biggest concerns with missing teeth. Your teeth are constantly moving, and surrounding teeth can eventually shift into the space created by a missing tooth. This causes your teeth to become misaligned, leading to other problems like premature wear, teeth grinding, fractured teeth, and more. Dental implants prevent these alignment problems from ever occurring! Implants are a simple, safe way to fill the gap left behind by a missing natural tooth. Dental implants also provide the structure and support your other teeth need to stay in place. Simply put, implants are the easiest way to replace missing teeth!

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are not complicated. In fact, their structure is very similar to the anatomy of a natural tooth. Dental implants are designed to blend seamlessly into a natural smile and complement the existing teeth.

To understand how dental implants work, it’s important to first understand that a dental implant is made up of three parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the crown (restoration).

Dental Implant Post

The implant post portion is a very small titanium screw that is surgically placed in your jaw by Dr. Singh. Our office uses titanium because it is very strong and acts as a replacement root for your new tooth.

The implant post is incredibly strong. After it is placed into your jawbone, it takes time for the bone to fuse around your implant. This process is known as “osseointegration” and usually takes anywhere from three to six months. It is very important to give the implant post enough time to fuse with the jawbone and the implant site enough time to heal before moving forward with the rest of the implant placement process.

Abutment

Once the titanium post has sufficiently fused with the jawbone, we then attach the abutment portion of the implant. The abutment looks like a very small rod, and it sits both above and below the gum line and provides a base to attach the crown. The abutment is the link that holds the implant together.

Typically, your mouth will need to heal for several more weeks after the abutment is placed. Sometimes, however, the crown can be placed at the same dental appointment as the abutment. Dr. Singh will use his best judgment when he determines if your implant site is ready for a dental crown.

Dental Crown

Many dental crowns are made by outside dental labs. Usually, a dentist will take an impression of the area where the dental crown will go, and then the impression is sent off to a lab where it is created. During this process, everyone must wait for several weeks while the dental crown is made.

At Singh Smile Care, however, we work hard to make things as easy as possible for our dental patients. This is why Dr. Singh is able to create beautiful dental crowns right here in our Phoenix dental implants office! We make our dental implant crowns on-site so that patients can start enjoying their dental implants more quickly.

What are mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants work in exactly the same way as regular dental implants, but they are much smaller and are mainly used as a replacement for small teeth and to keep partial dentures from shifting. Because they are so small, a benefit of mini dental implants is that the entire placement procedure can usually be done in just one office visit. This means that after just one appointment, you will leave with a brand-new replacement tooth. This is a huge advantage over regular-sized dental implants!

Mini dental implants are not right for every situation. If you would like to know if mini dental implants are a good treatment option for you, make a dental appointment with Dr. Singh to discuss your options.

Is it difficult to care for dental implants?

Taking care of your dental implants is one of the easiest things you will ever do! After you have had one or more dental implants placed, all you need to do is simply keep brushing and flossing as usual. Your implant site will be tender for the first little while, so take care to brush and floss around the area gently.

Implants are designed to function like natural teeth, so you should treat them the same way you would treat any other tooth. Do not bite down on inanimate objects such as pens or place direct pressure on your implants when you are not eating. Additionally, try to avoid biting directly on your implant if you are chewing very hard food. Although your implant will be very strong, the porcelain crown can still break if extreme force is applied.

To take the best care of your dental implants, you should also rinse daily with an antibacterial mouthwash and continue seeing the dentist regularly for scheduled cleanings and dental exams. Our dental team at Singh Smile Care is available whenever you have questions or concerns about your dental implants in Phoenix. We are happy to schedule a dental appointment if you ever need to be seen or examined by Dr. Singh.

Are dental implants expensive?

It is true that dental implants are more expensive than other tooth replacement options. What you have to consider, however, is that dental implants are the most durable and reliable tooth replacement option in the long run. While other options may be less expensive up-front, they typically are not as high-quality as dental implants and therefore will not last as long.

Often times, our Phoenix dental patients tell us that they have tried other restorative dental options, but that these options actually ended up being more expensive over time because they have to be replaced or repaired. At Singh Smile Care, we stand by dental implants as the best restorative option for lost or missing teeth. If you are a good candidate for dental implants, we will always recommend dental implants first before other treatments.

Dental implants can be expensive or inexpensive depending on your personal situation and on your insurance coverage. Prices for dental implants in Phoenix can vary greatly, so we promise we will always work with you to determine the best deal and the best course of action. The bottom line, however, is that dental implants are a wise investment that you make in your oral health. The up-front cost of dental implants is offset by the years and years of use you will get out of them! Most of our dental patients agree that they would rather pay more for a service one time and have the results last forever than pay less in the short-term for a product that will not last as long.

Our dental office accepts all PPO insurance plans. If you would like to learn more about how your insurance coverage will affect the overall cost of your dental implants, feel free to call us at (623) 400-6009 today!
