Chips, Gaps, or Stains? Your Guide to the Right Cosmetic Fix

Not every smile concern needs the same treatment. Here is how we match chips, gaps, stains, and worn edges to the right fix.

Chips, Gaps, or Stains? Your Guide to the Right Cosmetic Fix

A chipped front tooth, a gap you have always noticed, coffee stains that will not brush away: these are the most common reasons people come to us asking about cosmetic dentistry. The good news is each one has a clear, usually minimally invasive fix. The trick is matching the concern to the right treatment.

Most cosmetic concerns fall into four groups: chips or cracks, gaps, staining, and worn or uneven edges. Dr. Singh looks at which group you are in, how much tooth is involved, and what you want the result to look like, then recommends the simplest path that will get you there.

Chips and Minor Fractures

Bonding is the go-to for small chips. Tooth-colored resin is shaped onto the tooth and hardened with a curing light, often in under an hour. Larger chips may need a veneer to cover the front of the tooth or a crown to protect the whole thing. If the chip is deep enough to expose the pulp, a root canal comes first, and we can usually do that the same day.

Closing Gaps

A gap between teeth is called a diastema. Bonding works well for small gaps and removes no tooth structure, though it may not hold up as long under heavy biting. Veneers suit moderate gaps by widening the visible surface of the teeth. Larger gaps are best closed with orthodontics, such as Invisalign or Six Month Smiles, which move the teeth into alignment.

Stains: When Whitening Works and When It Does Not

Surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, or tobacco respond well to professional whitening. Our in-office Opalescence Boost treatment brightens teeth in about an hour, and take-home trays work gradually over several weeks. Stains that come from inside the tooth, such as from certain medications, fluorosis, or an old injury, do not lift with bleaching. For those, veneers or bonding give a reliable result.

Signs that whitening alone may not be enough:

  • Grey, brown, or patchy stains
  • Discoloration on only one or two teeth
  • Little change from past whitening
  • Crowns or large fillings in the smile zone

Worn or Uneven Edges

Grinding, acid erosion, and age all wear down the biting edges. For mild unevenness, dental contouring gently reshapes the enamel with no anesthetic and immediate results. More significant wear may call for veneers across several teeth or, in some cases, a full-mouth restoration that combines crowns, implants, and veneers. If grinding is the cause, a night guard protects the result.

How We Help You Choose

Your consultation takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Dr. Singh listens to what bothers you, examines your teeth, and explains each option along with how long it takes and what it feels like. For chips and urgent cosmetic concerns, same-day treatment is often possible, so you do not have to live with it for weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need veneers, or will whitening do?

If the stains are on the surface, whitening is usually enough. If the discoloration comes from inside the tooth, or you also have chips or gaps you want fixed, veneers generally give the better result.

Is bonding permanent?

No. Bonding typically lasts five to ten years with good care. It can chip or stain over time, especially with hard foods or grinding, and it can be touched up or redone.

Can a gap be closed without braces or aligners?

Often, yes. Bonding or veneers can close small to moderate gaps. Larger gaps may need a combined approach or orthodontic treatment to move the teeth.
