Oral Hygiene Basics

Good oral health comes down to a few simple habits done every day. Here is what we recommend for every member of your family.

Oral Hygiene Basics

Most dental problems start small. Plaque builds up, hardens into tartar, and the gums begin to pull away from the teeth. Left alone, bacteria from the mouth can reach the bloodstream and affect your overall health. A steady home routine, plus regular checkups, stops most of that before it starts.

The basics are the same for kids and adults, and they do not take much time. Below is what to include each day, what to eat and drink, and a few habits that make a real difference over the years. If anyone in your family feels nervous about dental visits, let us know. We can help with that too.

Why It Matters

Protecting your smile protects the rest of your body. When plaque and tartar sit along the gum line, the gums become inflamed and can form pockets or recede. Bacteria can then enter the bloodstream. Keeping teeth and gums clean lowers that risk and keeps your mouth comfortable.

Your Daily Routine

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Spend about two minutes and cover every surface, including along the gum line. Floss at least once a day, curving the floss around each tooth and gently below the gum line. After flossing, rinse with a dentist-approved mouthwash for about a minute.

  • Brush twice daily, two minutes, soft bristles
  • Floss once a day, curving around each tooth
  • Rinse with mouthwash after flossing

Food, Drink, and Everyday Habits

Sugary and acidic foods and drinks feed the bacteria that cause decay, so try to limit them. Cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, and plain green or black tea are easier on your teeth. Drink fluoridated water. Quit tobacco, and go easy on alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks.

See us for a checkup and cleaning, usually every six months. If you have a health condition that affects your teeth, keep it managed. When plaque and tartar have built up below the gum line, we may recommend a deep cleaning.

  • Checkups about every six months
  • No tobacco; limit alcohol and sugary drinks
  • Choose cheese, fruit, vegetables, and plain tea

Helping Your Family

Children should follow the same routine as adults, with help until they can brush well on their own. Baby teeth matter even though they fall out, because they guide the jaw and the adult teeth coming in behind them. If a family member feels anxious about the dentist, tell us. We take time to explain things and go at a comfortable pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is oral hygiene so important?

Because it protects more than your teeth. Gum disease and decay let bacteria into the body, and that has been linked to problems far beyond the mouth. Daily care keeps the whole system healthier.

Is oral care important for children?

Yes. Caring for baby teeth sets up a child's future oral health. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and shape how the jaw develops, so cavities and early loss can cause problems later.

What should a dental care routine include?

Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing with mouthwash, and regular checkups and cleanings. That is the whole list, and it works.

What is a dental checkup?

A visit where we examine your teeth and gums and clean away plaque and tartar. It is sometimes called a dental cleaning. We also take X-rays when needed to catch problems you cannot see.

What is the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes buildup above the gum line. A deep cleaning also cleans below the gum line and smooths the roots. We usually recommend it when there are signs of gum disease.
